All good things must come to an end…

Wed, 12/23/2009 - 02:11

To the hardworking and dedicated community at mytreo.net,

When I first joined mytreo.net in February of 2005, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was late getting into the game, and at that time, MTDN was just a growing community. However, MTDN was quickly able to differentiate itself from any other forum – it had a real sense of “community.” Not long after I joined, I was determined that if I was going to make a difference, it would here. That journey started in July of 2005, when I my application for a new downloads admin was accepted. This would become the start of a hobby, a rather addicting one!

In the months that followed, I gradually learned the inner workings of MTDN, as well as HTML code, which I had no prior experience with. At that time, the Just Chat! section of General Chat was a popular escape from the technical talk of the rest of the forums, and there were several dedicated people who spent almost all of their time entertaining the rest of MTDN. At one point, I myself was also a Just Chat regular. At its peak, MTDN had over 4000 members online at a point.

Soon, things changed. The MTDN store wasn’t viable financially, developers weren’t getting paid, and the admins were unofficially given “missing in action” titles. MTDN was in financial trouble, and a lot of us held our breaths as we waited for things to straighten out. Thankfully, it did, but we were pretty much left to fend for ourselves as MTDN no longer became a priority for the admins. Many team members slowly disappeared and the front page once went without an update for several months, but nonetheless, 500,000 members was achieved in September of 2008.

The lack of a workforce behind MTDN resulted in my gradual increase in responsibilities, including front page writer, downloads admin, forum moderator, and of course, regular contributor. Knowing that single-handedly I would not be able to keep the site afloat, several regular contributors were introduced into the MTDN team, and a new chapter in MTDN history began. Daily activity increased significantly, and Just Chat briefly experienced a revival!

Spammers arrived at MTDN in mid-2008. Running an older version of the SMF forum software, MTDN was vulnerable, and there was little that forum moderators could do. The moderators, as well as forum members, vigilantly looked out for suspicious posts, which were removed manually. I’m certain that many people knew in the back of their minds that the end of MTDN was close, but we refused to believe it.

In early December, MTDN suddenly became inaccessible, and we were certain that the end has come. Checking MTDN dropped out of my morning routine, with the exception of an occasional attempt to access the forum, and my attention turned from phones to my newly purchased Maglite LED flashlights and CandlePowerForums. Having a couple members on my contact list, I was able to contact MiDoJo, who sadly confirmed the fact that MTDN was also down for him. We arranged to make an international call and contact head admin, Chris, and sure enough, our worst fears were confirmed. He was kind enough to put the site back online for us to say a quick goodbye. So if I haven’t said it already, thank you for all the good memories, and it is unfortunately time for us to say good-bye. I hope you all have enjoyed your experience as part of the MTDN community as much as I have.

MiDoJo Here,

Hi All. Well Robin, pretty much summed it up. I really have enjoyed seeing many of you grow from clueless about PalmOS (and WinMo and even WebOS) to masters who were willing to spread your knowledge. I have often spent more time on MyTreo than in the “real world” and even before I ever started posting in the forum, was always using the Download section to make my Treo 600 and on better.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the site and the community as much as I have.

We don’t know when the site will go down, the DNS runs out in April. But please keep posting in the forum until it comes.

Be seeing you,

MiDoJo

Second WebOS Device Announced: The Palm Pixi

Pixi in the Flesh

Pixi in the Flesh

Please See the Update at the bottom

Once again, one day before Apple makes its big yearly announcement, Palm has graced us with a preview of a new WebOS device. This time it’s the Pixi (also known as the EOS) .

We always knew that the Prē was only the first in a new type of Palm Products; and this was confirmed back at the end of April of this Year when we first heard about the EOS. Rumors flew and some were true.

At MyTreo.net we try to set ourselves apart from other Palm sites by not just quoting those other sites and this article will attempt to stand by this idea. That said, few have actually seen or touched a Pixi and I am one among those who have not.

So again back to Palm’s news conference on 09/08/09. Palm shocked attendees by telling them that the next WebOS phone would be on Sprint’s shelves in time for the holidays and that it would be officially called the Pixi (Dropping the e from the name found in earlier rumors). Not only will it still communicate with Facebook, Google and AIM but additionally, right out of the box it will Synergize with Yahoo (including Ycalendar, Ymail, Yahoo Messenger) and LinkedIn (a large plus for business users). As well as the already present Facebook Contact and Calendar integration Pixi users will get a Facebook Application which will allow them to see news from friends and update their FB status. I think this is the Facebook “wall” but as many know I don’t use Facebook.

Hardware wise the Pixi will initially run on Sprint’s CDMA network and will have built in GPS just like its older sibling. However unlike the Prē there will NOT be wireless networking on this device. Also missing is the center button, though early reports state that tapping in the gesture area, where the button would’ve been, acts the same way as the button.
The Screen is a 2.63-inch 320×400 Resolution. Onboard is the same amount of Memory as the Prē , 8GB (with 7GB User Available), and it can accessed as a mass storage device on your computer (via MicroUSB connection).
The Exciting news about the Processor is: it will be the first phone with Qualcomm’s high-performance MSM7627 chip, which is smaller than most current smartphone processors and melds the Phone and application processor together.
The Camera is a 2-Megapixel camera so expect lesser quality in the photos than we’ve seen coming from our Prē Owners (they’ve got a 3-MegaPixel camera).
Personally, I like the fact that the headset/headphone jack is on the top, but I come from the Walkman Generation. Of course it wouldn’t be a Palm If it didn’t have a removable battery (1150 mAh) and a ringer on/off switch.
Much of what is on the Prē is also on the Pixi: including proximity sensor, accelerometer, and light sensor, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP built-in.
Of course it’s sprint so expect NFL, NASCAR, and SprintTV to be there as well. And the app catalog (and homebrew) will work as with the Prē (by then there might even be some more apps in the catalog). Sprint Again wants you to have a hefty data plan as this is a web intensive phone
So how much is this going to cost?
Palm’s not saying yet, nor is Sprint; I’d say think Centro ($99) not Treo ($150).

That was a lot to digest and I’ll summarize in a table below :)
But before I do that I want to touch on as really cool personalization extra that the Pixi will (optionally) have; art for the battery cover. Head over to http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pixi/artist.html and peak at the, touchtone compatible, cover replacements; each one is done by a different visual artist, and each one is numbered.  I like this one myself.

Please Comment and as more info comes out (directly from Palm please) I’ll update this article. . . or write another . . . or something.
For now Let’s try and keep discussion to the Future Models and I’ll work on getting the admins to set a Pixi board up by release time.

Cheers Your lovingly Off Kilter Moderator
